Critical Look at Inter-American System Washington, DC — Caribbean Central American Action (CCAA) announced today that a special townhall discussion on the evolution of regional alliances within the Inter-American system will be held during the 2009 Miami Conference on the Caribbean and Central America, taking place from November 30 - December 2, 2009, at the InterContinental Hotel, in Miami, Florida. This townhall has been organized to respond to an important debate that is taking place in the region: how is the emergence of the new political and economic power-players in South America challenging the existing partnerships within the Inter-American system; and are the regional institutions equipped to integrate this new reality into the frameworks upon which they were established? This panel will gather regional institutions, government representatives, and some of the most forward-leaning members of the private sector, and will be moderated by Mr. Peter Hakim of the Inter-American Dialogue. The session will take place on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. It will be preceded by a Policy Plenary that will bring together government representatives from the region's traditional partners, who will discuss how their policies towards the Caribbean and Central America are developing in the face of shifting global priorities. Both panels will discuss the broad policy issues that challenge the region today; and they will examine how political, economic, and social issues in individual countries are leading the regional socio-economic agenda. CCAA's Miami Conference on the Caribbean and Central America continues to be the premiere trade and policy forum for the countries of the Caribbean Basin. Titled "Responding to Global Challenges: Surviving and Prospering in Today's Economy," the 2009 Conference will highlight how the governments and the private sector of the Caribbean and Central America are addressing the multiple economic and political events that have dominated the past year and how the region's international partners are working through the challenges with them.
