SPECIAL ENERGY TOWN-HALL FOR MIAMI CONFERENCE Washington, DC — Caribbean Central American Action (CCAA) announced today that a special town-hall session will be held on Wednesday, December 2 on how the region is addressing energy needs and policies after a tumultuous 18 months of fluctuating prices, intense focus on alternative energy and proposed adjustments to existing bilateral agreements between governments. This will take place during the 2009 Miami Conference on the Caribbean and Central America, scheduled from November 30 - December 2, 2009, at the InterContinental Hotel, in Miami, Florida. Arguments have been made that emerging markets are best placed to implement alternative and renewable energy projects in order to increase conservation and lessen the burden of importing energy, but there is limited evidence that the Caribbean Basin region has been successful in attracting investment in this area. Invited speakers from different sectors of the energy spectrum including petroleum, utilities, bio-fuel and renewable companies as well as government representatives, will address these current and future challenges in the "Focus on Energy" town hall. Issues include lack of capital for investment in "new" energy as well as weak public-private partnership legislation, the need for centralized "mapping" to define regional market space for these types of projects, tariff and policy barriers for the importation of products and how a hemispheric energy agenda, if adopted, will impact the region in the short and medium term. CCAA's Miami Conference on the Caribbean and Central America continues to be the premiere trade and policy forum for the countries of the Caribbean Basin. Titled "Responding to Global Challenges: Surviving and Prospering in Today's Economy," the 2009 Conference will highlight how the governments and the private sector of the Caribbean and Central America are addressing the multiple economic and political events that have dominated the past year and how the region's international partners are working through the challenges with them.
