Charles Rangel Awarded Star of the Caribbean Award

Washington, D.C.–Caribbean Central American Action (CCAA) announced today that Congressman Charles Rangel, Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee was awarded the distinguished Star of the Caribbean Award during CCAA’s 2008 June Board Meeting & Washington Briefing held at the Washington Court Hotel on June 10th, 2008.

The Star of the Caribbean Award is given by the organization in recognition of distinguished service and committed efforts to improve the economic well being of the people of the Caribbean Basin.  Past recipients of the Star of the Caribbean Award include: Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham of The Bahamas, President Ricardo Maduro of Honduras, Prime Minister Patrick Manning of Trinidad & Tobago, Prime Minister Owen Arthur of Barbados, President Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Republic, U.S. Senator Robert Graham, as well as other influential Presidents, Prime Ministers, and private sector leaders of the region.

Congressman Charles Rangel of New York’s 15th District received the award for his support of the Caribbean and Central America, particularly for his advocacy for legislation that would assist the small economies of the region. Throughout his political career Congressman Rangel has recognized the strong ties between the Caribbean Basin and the United States and has worked to expand and strengthen this relationship. 

CCAA members in attendance for the briefings met with administration and congressional representatives including Christopher Padilla, Under Secretary for International Trade,  U.S. Department of Commerce; Kristen Madison, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, U.S. Department of State; and Dr. Tully Cornick, Deputy Assistant Administrator, Latin America  & the Caribbean, U.S. Agency for International Development.
