CCAA Hosts President-Elect Preval of Haiti

Washington, D.C.–The Association des Industries d’Haiti (ADIH), the American Chamber of Commerce in Haiti (AMCHAM-Haiti) and Caribbean Central American Action (CCAA) held a breakfast meeting in honor of Haitian President-Elect René Préval Wednesday morning, attended by U.S. and Haitian business representatives, and the President-elect’s economic advisory team.

The private sector led meeting focused on the needed support for preferential trade legislation, especially in the textile and manufacturing industries with the passage of HOPE, but also addressed the issues of privatization, national security and economic development, poverty reduction and port security. ''I believe that everybody understands that, with Haiti's situation in terms of poverty, we must create jobs'' stated President-Elect Preval through an interpreter. The meeting underlined the desire of the Presidency-Elect to bring to the table the private sector, the social sector, grassroots organizations, and government to create a dynamic economic strategy for the country.

CCAA is committed to working with Haitian Business Leaders and the Government of Haiti on important trade initiatives. CCAA is serving as the catalyst for a coordinated program of activities in Haiti with stakeholders and constituents to provide education awareness programming for users of the Haitian ports and the general population related to the new maritime security regime and the impact that it will have on port access, trade, industry, and employment.

The private sector meeting was an important stop on President-Elect Préval’s short visit to the United States, which included meetings with the United Nations, the Organization of American States, the International Monetary Fund, and with members of the U.S. Congress.

CCAA is a non-governmental organization that promotes private sector-led economic development in the Caribbean Basin. More information on the organization and the Annual Miami Conference can be found by visiting CCAA's website at www.c-caa.org.
