Special Health Breakfast Briefing at Miami Conference Washington, DC — Caribbean Central American Action (CCAA) is pleased to announce a special breakfast session addressing the spread of the H1N1 virus and other pandemics. This activity, being held in collaboration with Baptist Health International, will take place on December 2, 2009 from 7:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. at the Miami Conference on the Caribbean and Central America. As the Caribbean Basin works to prevent the spread of H1N1, and to treat populations infected with the virus, there continue to be many questions left to answer. A widespread epidemic in any of the countries would be devastating to the population, and would also have a crippling effect on the economies, particularly in those countries that are heavily dependent upon the tourism industry. The ramifications would reach well past the health care industry and create further strain in a region that is already experiencing economic stress as the result of the global financial downturn. This session will focus on the level of preparedness of Caribbean and Central American governments, health systems and industries in the face of the current H1N1 crisis and will feature speakers who will highlight successful best practices. Confirmed speakers include: Mark Frank, a member of the Influenza Unit of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention; Dr. Art Diskin, Vice President and Global Chief Medical Officer of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Ltd.; and Jean Arias, Director of Emergency Preparedness & Security and Dr. John Braden, Medical Director, South Miami Hospital Emergency Department and Medical Director, both of the Baptist Health South Florida Emergency Preparedness & Security Department. These experts will provide those in attendance with up-to-date information and details on the tools being used in response to the current H1N1 pandemic. CCAA's Miami Conference on the Caribbean and Central America continues to be the premiere trade and policy forum for the countries of the Caribbean Basin. Titled "Responding to Global Challenges: Surviving and Prospering in Today's Economy," the 2009 Conference will highlight how the Governments and the private sector of the Caribbean and Central America are addressing the multiple economic and political events that have dominated the past year and how the region's international partners are working through the challenges with them. Please confirm your attendance at this breakfast by contacting CCAA Associate Program Director Ms. Kelli Huntsman at 202-331-9467 ext. 826 or khuntsman@c-caa.org.
