Prime Minister Owen Arthur of Barbados Confirmed for
30th Miami Conference

Washington, D.C.–Caribbean Central American Action (CCAA) is pleased to announce that The Honorable Owen Arthur, Prime Minister of Barbados, has confirmed his participation in the upcoming 30th Miami Conference on the Caribbean Basin. The Conference is scheduled to take place December 4-6, 2006 at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Miami Florida.

Prime Minister Arthur will deliver a keynote address as well as receive the Star of the Caribbean Award on the evening of December 6.

The Star of the Caribbean Award is given in recognition of distinguished service and committed efforts to improve the economic well being of the people of the Caribbean Basin. Past recipients of the Star of the Caribbean Award include: President Ricardo Maduro of Honduras, Prime Minister Patrick Manning of Trinidad & Tobago, President Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Republic, U.S. Senator Robert Graham, as well as other influential Presidents, Prime Ministers, and private sector leaders of the region.

Prime Minister Arthur is currently serving his third term as Prime Minister of Barbados. Since his election in 1994, Prime Minister Arthur has assumed lead responsibility, within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), for the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME). He has also served as Chairman of the Commonwealth Ministerial Group on Small States, Chairman of the Global Conference on Small States, and Co-chairman of the Global Forum to deal with the OECD Harmful Tax Competition Initiative.

The Miami Conference titled “A United Third Border” is an important milestone for CCAA as we celebrate 30 years of involvement in the economic development of the Caribbean Basin, through advocacy, partnerships and alliances with the public and private sectors in the region. This year’s Miami Conference will continue to address current prospects for improving the economic well being of the people living and working in Central America and the Caribbean. The Conference will focus on strengthening the partnership between the business community, public sector and civil society to more aggressively confront the twin challenges of worsening poverty and increased global competition by attracting investment to our region and creating jobs for our people.
