Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Shannon Confirmed for
Miami Conference

Washington, D.C.–Caribbean Central American Action (CCAA) announced today that Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Thomas Shannon, is confirmed to participate at the Miami Conference on the Caribbean and Central America, taking place at the InterContinental Hotel in Miami, Florida, from December 1-3, 2008.

Mr. Shannon will speak at the Opening Dinner on Monday, December 1, helping to set the stage for two days of discussions on the issues most affecting the region’s economic development. This year has seen threats to the global financial system, food and fuel insecurity, and natural disasters; on the regional political front, there have been five elections over the past year, with seven more scheduled for 2009. The economic, social, and political landscape of the region is undergoing changes, while at the same time the U.S. elections will have taken place and Washington will be preparing for a new Administration. Mr. Shannon will outline his Bureau’s outlook for the region.

The Annual Miami Conference continues to be the only forum that focuses solely on the economies of the Caribbean and Central America. The conference brings leaders from the public sector, the business community and civil society together in a constructive dialogue to address issues affecting the region and its economic prospects. It combines major addresses by political leaders with workshops on industry and public policy issues. Roundtables give participants the opportunity to participate in a series of interactive discussions with subject-matter experts from the United States, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and Central America on issues vital to the agribusiness, energy, telecommunications, transportation and logistics and tourism industry sectors.
