SPECIAL MIAMI CONFERENCE SESSION TO FOCUS ON H1N1 VIRUS

Washington, DC — Caribbean Central American Action (CCAA) announced today that a special panel on the H1N1 virus, focusing on the level of preparedness of Caribbean and Central American governments, health systems and industries, will take place during the 33rd Annual Miami Conference on the Caribbean and Central America. The Conference will take place from November 30th to December 2nd, 2009, at the InterContinental Hotel in Miami, FL.

As the Caribbean Basin works to prepare itself for a possible outbreak of H1N1, there are critical issues to be addressed. An epidemic in any of the countries would be devastating to the population, and would also have a crippling effect on the economies, particularly in those countries that are heavily dependent upon the tourism industry. The ramifications would reach well past the health care industry and create further strain in a region that is already experiencing economic stress as the result of the global financial downturn.

"We are very pleased to be working with our Trustee members, notably Baptist Health International on this important issue", commented Cornelius Prior, the organization's Chairman.

Government officials, epidemiology and medical professionals, and leaders of industry have been invited to convene in Miami on Wednesday, December 2 to address the numerous challenges an H1N1 outbreak would cause for the region's economy, and to discuss preparation, mitigation, and best practices. With this panel, experts will provide those in attendance with up-to-date information and tools in the event of an H1N1 pandemic.

CCAA's Miami Conference on the Caribbean and Central America continues to be the premiere trade and policy forum for the countries of the Caribbean Basin. Titled "Responding to Global Challenges: Surviving and Prospering in Today's Economy," the 2009 Conference will highlight how the governments and the private sector of the Caribbean and Central America are addressing the multiple economic and political events that have dominated the past year and how the region's international partners are working through the challenges with them.
