Public Awareness Campaign Reaches Haitian Secondary Cities

Washington, D.C.–Caribbean Central American Action announced the recent completion of a series of Public Awareness activities in six provincial cities in Haiti under the Maritime Security Alliance for Haiti (MSAH). The MSAH is an initiative funded partially by the United States Agency United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and matched by the Haitian Government and the business community. The CCAA-led initiative is focused on Haiti’s efforts at compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s International Ships and Port Security (ISPS) Code and the United States’ Maritime Security Transportation Security Act, and is geared towards ensuring that the flow of goods and services to Haiti continue uninterrupted.

The Public Awareness campaign program was launched in Port-de-Paix, Miragôane, and St. Marc in July and concluded in Jacmel, Jeremie and Cap-Haitien in September 2006. The campaign is part of an on-going maritime security-strengthening program being implemented in Haiti to support the country’s international and local ports. The focus of the Public Awareness campaign was to engage the Haitian public and private sector maritime community, including port users and service providers, in the ISPS compliance process. The sessions were designed to provide participants with an overview of ISPS issues affecting local maritime activities, underlining the importance of maritime security compliance on commerce and trade.

Over 375 individuals participated in the sessions with a much larger audience exposed to the programming through media coverage on several national radio stations, including Radio Métropole, Vision 2000, and Radio Maxima, as well as through the daily Le Nouvelliste and monthly Cap-Express newspapers.

CCAA is a non-governmental organization that promotes private sector-led economic development in the Caribbean Basin. More information on the organization and the Annual Miami Conference can be found by visiting CCAA's website at www.c-caa.org.
